SOUTHBOURNE CANOE CLUB
Within the Club we like to encourage members to improve their skill levels and confidence when on the water, so to help with this we run various development courses . In the Christchurch Harbour area we are spoilt with some fantastic and varied paddling opportunities and will often find different groups wanting to go off in different directions. This is where we need club trained leaders. People who are confident and comfortable leading, or helping to lead, a group of fellow paddlers. A group may consist of youngsters or paddlers with little experience, so having someone on hand who can keep control, instil confidence, understand their surrounding and know how to deal with issues should they arise is of paramount importance.
CLUB-RUN LEADERSHIP SKILLS COURSE
These courses deliver the skill level required to lead a group of paddlers on our Thursday evening sessions and to assist our coaches on sea and white water trips.
An 8 hour First Aid certificate issued within 3 years is required before a group can be led on the water.
Where a first aid course needs to be attended, the cost will be met by the Club.
The required age is 18 years and over and candidates should hold a BCU 2* certificate for Christchurch River and Harbour and a BCU 3* certificate for assisting sea and white water trips. A candidate under the age of 18 years who is a qualified Level 1 Coach would also fulfil the requirement.
If you wish to lead the following season, you will need to attend a refresher session run annually in Spring.
This is not a BCU run course and no certificate will be issued.
There are Child Protection procedures to be followed.
