| Training Information & Costs
We meet on every Thursday
between the months of May to August. We meet at 6pm at the Hengistbury Head Outdoor Education Centre.
New paddlers joining Southbourne Canoe Club
who can provide previous evidence of completing at least a BCU One Star will be
allowed to paddle freely with the club and will not be required to undertake an
introductory session. If you are unable to provide such evidence then you will
need to attend and complete a training Session.
From 2009, anyone wishing to complete training with the club, must first become
a member, before a booking will be taken.
UKCC/BCU Paddle Power Start & Passport (Equal to BCU One Star)
This course is designed for any beginner paddler from 8-14 years old is the minimum standard for any person who wishes to paddle freely with the club. This course is designed to introduce younger paddlers to the basic concepts of boat control and safety whilst on the water. It breaks down the syllabus into clear and distinct sections, meaning paddlers should take a clear and identifiable achievment away from each session. Paddlers will possess their own 'check sheets' for the coaches to tick off along the way. This course consists of 4 sessions over 4 weeks, there is no official assessment sessions as this is done during the course.

BCU One Star Assessments (Equal to UKCC/BCU Paddle Power Start & Passport)
This course is for any 'beginner' paddler 12 or more years old and must be the minimum standard for any person who wishes to paddle freely with the club. This course is designed to introduce paddlers to the basic concepts of boat control and safety to enable paddlers to be safe and confident on flat sheltered water. The course consists of 4 sessions over 4 weeks, there will 3 training sessions and an assessment in the final week.

BCU Two Star Assessments
This course is for any one who has achieved BCU One Star, or Paddler Power Passport standard. It is designed to introduce more advanced boat control and rescue techniques. To complete this course you will also need to experience and be able to confidently use another style of boat (usually an Open Canoe) to a similar standard, which will all be provided during the course, however previous use and practise is strongly advised. The course consists of 4 sessions over 4 weeks, there will 3 training sessions and an assessment in the final week.

BCU
Three Star assessment
This course is for any one who has achieved the BCU 2 Star standard, and is a progressive appraoch to 'intermediate' paddling. This award is discpline specific. If you have any questions about this course please contact Chas on training@southbourne-canoe-club.org.uk.

Pricing
Paddle Power Start & Passport - £13 to SCC = £13
1 Star course - £10 to SCC + £5 to BCU when course complete = £15
2 Star course - £20 to SCC + £5 to BCU when course complete = £25
3 Star course - £30 to SCC + £10 (BCU member) / £20 (non BCU member) to BCU when completed = £40/50
Places
must be paid for before the start of the course, no money no place and once you
have payed for the course, we will not be able to offer refunds if you are unable
to attend the course. Cheques should
be made payable to Southbourne Canoe Club.
Please
note that all children must be over 8 years old Novices/beginners
must attend on the start date and complete a full session.
